An international competition undertaken in association with HOK and CPG, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital will consist of a 707 bed general hospital and an adjacent 286 bed community hospital in the Jurong township of Singapore.

The ultimate objective is to create a 'hospital without walls': a health-care facility that is for the community and of the community, offering high-quality, affordable care to all Singaporeans.  To integrate the large-scale public building into the dense urban context, the site plan incorporates a community park and floating green roof terraces that link two existing green boulevards through the site, continuing the existing urban parkway system.

A second level bridge connects to the rapid transit station and adjacent retail and community uses. To provide every patient with a window - in both the government-subsidised and private care wards - the design staggers the wall arrangements, giving the hospital tower exteriors a sculptured, textured appearance. Maximising natural ventilation and day-lighting generated the organic form of the ward towers, with vertical sunshades animating the glass curtain wall.

The entire hospital ward tower design is being undertaken by studio505 and delivers a unique and innovative design that is better for patients, staff and the environment. studio505 developed the radical new configuration for the beds in the ward towers, improving natural ventilation by 200% and giving every patient a window with a view to a garden from which to take fresh air.

The hospital is set to achieve Singapore’s Greenmark Platinum - this outstanding environmental energy performance is created in symbiosis with an outstanding patient and person centric design that improves healing, creates well-being and connects every person to the world of gardens and nature even in the highest care facility.
